Why SEO Matters for Blog Writing

According to Impactplus.com, Google has received approximately 2.3 trillion searches this year, and of the billions of searches that occur every day, 15% of daily searches are new to Google. So how does your blog achieve the most amount of hits? Through search engine optimization. SEO uses important keywords to attract readers and consumers to a particular site and to hopefully make sure that your site is at the top of Google, Bing or any other search engine’s displayed hits.

So, let’s say that I really wanted to obtain a lot of hits on my website where I write blogs about ocean conservation, my keyword could be “ocean” or “ocean conservation” if I wanted my subject to be broad. If I wanted to go more specific and talk about sharks and their importance to the oceanic ecosystem, my keywords might be “sharks” or “sharks and the ecosystem.” You can go as broad or specific as you would like with search engine optimization.

If you search on Google, “search engine optimization”, what comes up? You get hits like “Search Engine Optimization – All-in-1 Tool for any SEO Task” or “What is SEO? Search Engine Optimization 2020.” You’ll notice that under both of these search result hits, that a preview of the webpage is displayed underneath the title, and in that display are the words you typed into the search engine, bolded. This helps you determine which search result will work best for what information you were looking for. Also included in your search results hits underneath the display, there will sometimes be a line that says, “not included” and will have the words you typed into the search engine scratched out in gray, that are not included in that particular search result.

What do you do with this information when writing a blog, and why does it matter? Blogs tend to fall well beneath scholarly articles or information websites when a reader searches a particular subject, so it is important to identify your keyword early on if you have any hope of achieving search engine optimization. You want your blog to tell a story, have an angle and to capture the readers’ attention all the way to the end.

It is important that your blog have a purpose, it needs to be something that will resonate with the reader or that aims to inform the reader on a particular subject. If someone searches “What to know when applying to law schools”, your blog could explain the best ways to organize a resume, what to expect when searching for recommendation letters or you could even talk about how to write your personal statement. With any of that information, you would need to include a strong keyword that has to do with “law” and “schools” if you want your website to hit at the top of the search results.

Figuring out where to start can be overwhelming, but if you sit down with the intent of writing something, do your research, be creative, be determined and have fun!
